Every year, right around the time the weather starts to shift and everyone is thinking about getting their skin ready for summer, I find myself having the same conversation with clients. And I love this conversation, I really do, but I also feel like I could be having it louder. So I’m putting it here, in writing, so I can just send people a link.
Daily sunscreen is the single most important thing you can do for your skin. Full stop. More than any facial, any chemical peel, any treatment we offer at Dollface. If there is one habit that will genuinely change the long-term health and appearance of your skin, it is wearing SPF every single morning, without exception. And I say that as someone who is deeply, professionally obsessed with skin treatments.
What UV Exposure Is Actually Doing to Your Skin
I think the reason people underestimate sun damage is that it doesn’t always look dramatic right away. You’re not necessarily burning every time you step outside. But the damage is happening quietly, and it compounds over time in ways that are really hard to reverse.
When your skin is exposed to UV rays without protection, UVB rays damage the surface layers of skin, while UVA rays, the ones responsible for deeper damage and aging, penetrate further, breaking down collagen and elastin. Over time, that breakdown shows up as fine lines, loss of firmness, and changes in texture that can be hard to pinpoint but are very real.
Then there’s pigmentation. Unprotected sun exposure is one of the leading causes of hyperpigmentation, including sunspots, melasma, and the kind of uneven tone that makes skin look dull and tired. A lot of clients come in wanting to address dark spots or discoloration, and while we absolutely can help with that, the most important part of any pigmentation treatment is preventing new damage from forming. If you’re treating hyperpigmentation without wearing SPF daily, you’re working against yourself.
This is all captured under the term photoaging, and according to the American Academy of Dermatology, up to 80 percent of visible skin aging is caused by UV exposure. That number still gets me every time.

The Excuses I Hear (And Why They Don’t Hold Up)
I say this with so much love, because I have genuinely heard all of these: “I only go outside for a few minutes.” “It’s cloudy today.” “I’m mostly in the car.”
Here’s the thing about UVA rays: they penetrate through glass and through clouds. Your morning commute? Your skin is exposed. That overcast Tuesday in June when you don’t think twice about it? Still exposed. UVA rays are present from sunrise to sunset, rain or shine, and they do not care that you’re running a quick errand.
The Skin Cancer Foundation notes that daily SPF use can reduce your risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma by about 40 percent and lower melanoma risk as well. But even setting the medical side aside, if you care about your skin looking healthy and even-toned as you age, daily sunscreen is the single highest-return habit you can build.
If You’ve Had a Skin Treatment Recently, This Is Even More Critical
This is something I talk about with every client after a service. Whether it’s a facial, a chemical peel, dermaplaning, microneedling, or BioRePeel… any treatment that supports cell turnover or addresses texture and tone leaves your skin more vulnerable temporarily. Fresh, treated skin absorbs UV radiation more readily, and unprotected exposure after a treatment can cause hyperpigmentation, compromise your results, and undo a lot of the good work we just did together.
The same goes for permanent makeup. If you’ve recently had microblading, ombre powder brows, or lip blush, your skin is healing, and UV exposure can affect both the healing process and the longevity of your results. Sun protection in the weeks after any permanent makeup service is genuinely non-negotiable.
If you’re investing in your skin through treatments, skincare, or permanent makeup, SPF is what protects that investment. Every single day.

Why the Right Sunscreen Actually Matters
Not all SPF is created equal, and I think this is part of why people fall off the habit. If your sunscreen feels heavy, leaves a white cast, pills under makeup, or just feels like one more annoying step in your morning… you’re going to skip it. And I get that.
That’s why I’ve been pointing clients toward Colorescience. Their sun protection products are lightweight, they wear beautifully under makeup, and they’re formulated with skin health in mind. The kind of sunscreen you actually want to put on in the morning, which means you’re going to wear it consistently, which is the whole point. You can shop the collection at colorescience.com/collections/sun-protection.
Building the Habit
The best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually use. If the texture or finish of what you’re currently using is getting in the way, it might just be time to try something different. Keep your SPF next to your moisturizer so it’s impossible to forget, apply it every morning including days you don’t plan to be outside, and if you’re out for an extended period, reapply every two hours.
That’s really it. There’s no complicated system here. It’s a daily habit with an enormous long-term impact.
